Modesty

Most of the time we say that modesty is an admirable quality. Modesty can build strong relationships, foster a collaborative spirit, and create a positive environment where everyone feels valued, However, there’s a fine line between modesty and becoming excessive reticent. I believe that excessive modesty could also become a bad quality.

It can lead others to overlook our contributions, and in professional settings, it might result in missed promotions or undervalued work. So we have to teach children they should be polite, but never too modest as it can prevent us from advocating for ourselves, seizing opportunities, and receiving the recognition we deserve.

I learned over time that it is important when someone praises your work to accept it with grace, but it has always been important to me to also recognize the role of others in my success, give the credit where it is due. Never forget where you came from and who introduced you to others.

I am also convinced it is a beautiful quality if you are able to share the spotlight and appreciate the contributions of your team and collaborators.

I work in different business contexts and with different cultures and I try to never forget that cultural and personal backgrounds can influence our views on modesty.

In some cultures, modesty is deeply ingrained and highly valued, while in others, assertiveness is encouraged. Personal upbringing and experiences also shape how we perceive and practice modesty. Understanding these influences can help us navigate the balance more effectively.

By finding the right balance, we can embrace the best of both worlds: the quiet confidence of modesty and the assertiveness needed to advocate for ourselves.

So, let’s strive for a balanced approach, where we celebrate our achievements, acknowledge the contributions of others, and navigate life with humility and confidence.
