Sustainability is a mindset

During a call this week, with a possible client, he asked me what sustainability meant to me. I thought it would be an idea to also share my thoughts in my blog.
As an entrepreneur, I am convinced that sustainability is not just about ticking off boxes or obtaining certifications. While those achievements are important and offer validation, true sustainability is a constant state of mind, a commitment to making decisions that benefit the greater good.

Sustainability is woven into the everyday choices we make as business leaders. It’s about considering the long-term impact of our actions—not only on the environment but also on society, our communities, and future generations. It’s a lens through which we view our business operations, from how we source materials to how we treat our employees and customers.

Often, people equate sustainability with certifications or certain eco-friendly practices, and while those are important benchmarks, they’re only part of the bigger picture. Real sustainability goes beyond that—it’s about integrity, accountability, and constantly striving to do better.

It means asking ourselves tough questions: Are we reducing waste? Are we supporting fair labor practices? Are we innovating in ways that don’t exploit resources or people?

As my readers now, I have written a book “10 Quintessential Questions” about the importance of asking the right questions. Asking yourself questions about sustainability is key, like many other things when you are in business.

For me, sustainability is about finding a balance—ensuring that business growth and profitability don’t come at the expense of the planet or society. It’s about doing good, not just for the sake of meeting regulatory requirements or winning awards, but because it’s the right thing to do. It’s a mindset that challenges us to lead by example, to show that we can run successful businesses while minimizing our footprint and creating positive change.

As entrepreneurs, we have the power to shape the future, not just through the products or services we offer but through the values we uphold. By embracing sustainability as a way of thinking, we can inspire others in our industries to prioritize the greater good over short-term gains.

And that, to me, is the true meaning of sustainability—creating a lasting impact that benefits everyone, not just today, but for years to come.
