What does freedom really mean?

Watching my daughter fly out to begin her new adventure, I couldn’t help but feel a shift in how I see freedom. For her, freedom is about exploring, growing, living on her own terms. For me, as a mother, freedom means letting go. Trusting. Accepting that her path now belongs more to her than to me.

It made me wonder: is freedom always about expansion, or is it sometimes about surrender?

Because freedom is deeply tied to health too. When you lose part of your health, freedom suddenly feels fragile. I know this from my own experience. Do we need to feel healthy before we can feel free, or does freedom itself create a kind of inner health?

And freedom is also tied to responsibility. Some people believe they can do whatever they want because they feel strong, but in doing so, they might hurt others. Freedom, when misunderstood, can become selfish. True freedom, I believe, always carries solidarity with it.

It makes me think about those who live alone, without family nearby, only a phone, a television, maybe a pet. What does freedom mean in that kind of solitude? Perhaps freedom isn’t only about what you can do, but about who you can share it with.

And in our world today, where truth is blurred, freedom also means being able to trust what you hear and see. When fake news and hidden agendas erode that, freedom feels uncertain.

But in the end, maybe freedom isn’t about control at all. Maybe it’s about presence. The small acts of noticing, the smile of a cashier, the sound of your own breathing, the courage to believe that even if we let go for a moment, things will be all right.

As I watch my daughter take this step, I realize freedom is rarely neat or easy. It comes with fear, with doubt and with love.
