The cliffhanger

It is the day of our national holiday today. Well that’s nothing new, that is not at all a cliffhanger. Indeed.

I remember back in the days I was playing in a soap series, the cliffhangers, they were quite something.

Never watched soap series, unless to see my own skills, a long time ago.

But now I can get very curious how the series I watch, mostly on Netflix, will evolve. Yes I love cliffhangers. I wonder who is the one deciding on what the cliffhanger will be, is it the scenario writer, or does someone have the function to make the cliffs hang?

A cliffhanger is a situation or part of a play or movie that is very exciting or frightening because you are left for a long time not knowing what will happen next. Did you know that a cliffhanger in copywriting is also called the “curiosity gap”.

Aha no wonder I love cliffhangers with that curious mind of mine.

It is about building up tension and suspense. I have the feeling our brains like to have a moment of doubt before making a good decision, that's maybe why we want to have this moment of doubt, will we go left or right, will the good win or the bad one. Will we live or die?

I have the feeling we also need cliffhanger moments in our life, if everything is too predictable, then where is the fun?

The power of a cliffhanger ending is making sure people become so invested in your work that they wait with bated breath for your next creation.

In my first book I created a fictional story, a relation between Adil & Sophie, and tried to add some suspense. I have the feeling people liked the way the tension was built even in some very small parts, as at the end of the day the book was a non-fiction book.

Only for the trill of the cliffs I think one day I would love to write a novel, or a screenplay, a series.

I wonder if those that really climb the cliffs also like this uncertainty, or is uncertainty only something to keep fictional.

As with many things in life however, you don’t want your audience becoming frustrated with you because every piece of content you post ends on a cliffhanger.

Because it does create tension in the minds of your audience, it’s best to use it moderately.

Moderation makes the cliffs more exciting.
