Is talent enough to achieve greatness?

I recently finished Angela Duckworth’s Grit, and it’s left me reflecting deeply on the idea of what truly drives success. One of the most striking lines in her book is this: “Talent is common. What we invest to develop that talent is the critical final measure of greatness.”

This resonates so much with me because we often place talent on a pedestal, as though it’s the magic ingredient for success. But Duckworth challenges that view, reminding us that talent alone doesn’t guarantee greatness. It’s the effort, the perseverance, and the relentless drive to keep going—even when things get hard—that separate the good from the exceptional.

What stood out most to me was the connection Duckworth makes between grit and coaching. To foster grit—in ourselves or in others—it’s not enough to cheer from the sidelines. It’s about how we communicate. What you say, and more importantly, how you say it, matters immensely. Great coaches, whether in sports, business, or life, know this. They inspire effort by being both demanding and supportive, challenging individuals to stretch beyond their limits while offering the encouragement to keep going.

This made me think about how we guide others in their journey. Are we creating environments where grit can thrive? Are we encouraging resilience through constructive feedback and the right kind of challenge? Coaching grit isn’t about offering empty praise or focusing only on results—it’s about recognizing the process, celebrating the effort, and instilling the belief that persistence is more valuable than innate talent.

In a world that often glamorizes quick wins and natural ability, Duckworth’s work is a reminder that greatness is built, not born. It’s a process, and grit is the fuel that powers it.

As I reflect on her insights, I’m inspired to think about how we can all invest in developing our talents—and help others do the same—by fostering grit, resilience, and the determination to keep striving.
