How many times throughout my career did people ask me what my focus was? I remember the times it made me feel bad as I thought something was wrong with me. Most of the time the people that asked me to choose the focus in between the different things I was combining, were very successful specialists.
But now I reply: my focus is that I am very good at shifting my focus.
It is not because you did different things in your professional life that you lack focus.
Of course it is important to develop a finisher’s habit in the things you do. Some people regularly drop new projects because something goes wrong or things get tough. But when you create this habit, we teach our brains for this behavior. You need to find out for yourself what you see as an experiment and what you see as a real project. And then you need to strive to be excellent, because perfection is an illusion.
As a trained project manager I try to start with excellent planning and set deadlines, soft ones and hard ones. I am also very aware that as a Project Manager you need to be able to deal with change, and you need to have the leadership skill to help your team to navigate through the changes, even when it gets stormy. You need to continue to check on people, especially the ones that are not so keen on changes. As a versatile person you need to understand that we are all different in the amount of agility we have inside us. It is good to lend a hand from time to time to help people reach their goals.
Do not get me wrong, stepping out of my comfort zone is also a challenge for me, that step into uncertainty. Maybe I might l fail! And that fear of failure is scary.
But when I decide to play the game I play the game to win, and not to avoid the loss. The determination of a topsporter is sometimes unbelievable, impossible to explain (and also a bit crazy)
